Rocketship Education: Eliminating Education Gap between the Rich and the Poor

Education is the key to success, so they say. It can unlock many possibilities in the future. However, in our societies, not everyone has equal opportunities to education. Some of the children from ample backgrounds may yearn for this key to their future but may not have the luck due to lack of access to education due to a myriad of factors major of them being poverty. Charter schools are the only equalizer in this kind of situation. They give children from poor backgrounds a chance to get an education just like their counterparts from rich families.

Rocketship Education is a public charter school which has helped many children from poor families gets access to education at a reduced or no cost at all. The school which was co-founded in 2007 by Preston Smith and John Danner offers personalized learning to students. The school has 16 branches so far and plans to expand more. Its headquarters are based in Redwood City, California. Some its branches are found in San Jose, Nashville, Concord California, Milwaukee and Washington D.C.

Apart from offering personalized and blended learning style, the school network also has total parental involvement in the running of the institution. Parents are actively involved in interviewing the teaching staff. The school also has adaptive software that enables students to achieve higher achievements.

Selected parents undergo training to help them carry out panel interviews for the teaching staff. According to Preston, Smith, the CEO of the Rocketship Education, he says he can’t remember any time when he, the school leaders and parents were in disagreement. Everything in the school is done on consensus. Sometimes, the schools hold community meetings to enable parents to meet job finalists. This will give them confidence on the type of people they are entrusting the education of their children with.

Charter schools in the country depend heavily on contributions from well-wishers to support their day to day activities. Rocketship Education gets support from different well-wishers such as the Turner-Agassi Charter School Facilities Fund.

The role of charter schools has proven to be crucial. They eliminate the gap in education between the rich and the poor. Through charter schools, it has been proven that children from rich backgrounds are no better than those from low-income families given the same circumstances.
