Radiology And Cloud Technology

There is a new trend in radiology that allows an x-ray image to be obtained then previewed in moments. It can be viewed anywhere within a Picture Archiving and Communication Systems (PACS) network. This will lead to improved patient care with more comfort and increased productivity. The image is of very high quality and the system is known as direct digital radiography (DDR). Patients will be able to have their x-rays put on a CD to take to their referring physician or hospital. Less radiation is used with the DDR system while acquiring the image. Increased competition in this area has also led to lower prices.

Imaging Advantage, founded in 2006, is a leading provider of DDR services and is dedicated to assisting hospitals and radiology groups with a plan tailored for each individual place. They promote enhanced services and excellence in patient care. Imaging Advantage has management professionals that help with the plans and some of the finest board-certified radiologists. With cloud-based radiology, if a radiologist is unavailable to read the x-ray there is a list of others that have the proper credentials, are state licensed, and have hospital privileges. This leads to time saved in receiving a reading and leads to a quicker diagnosis.

With the DDR system a physician is able to preview the scan of a trauma victim that is en route and already have an operating room properly prepared by the time they arrive. This is also a good way to get another opinion. There would also be an option of a physician to do extra work from home during off-hours for teleradiology by having a workstation in their home. In 2017 a regulation goes in to effect that will require physicians to confer with clinical decision support (CDS) before ordering advanced imaging. The network is a cost effective way to concur while having increased efficiency and better serving physicians and patients. The DDR system has also been using a wireless system that allows easier positioning of the patient and added convenience to the technologist working alone. Another positive result is a drop in infection that in the past had at times been traced to the tether on a Digital Radiography (DR) mobile unit. A wireless system can be taken into the ICU, OR, ER, or directly to the patient.

Cloud technology is the wave of the future, and it will allow hospitals and health care facilities the ability to network with a team of doctors. There continues to be those that do not agree and are resistant to the change, even though DDR has improved quality and safer doses. It is cost efficient and allows increased access to x-ray equipment. The system attempts to partner with local radiologists and would allow for storage of the images in an off-site network. This would allow easier viewing through multiple devices and utilize back up files. DDR seems to be the solution to a lot of problems.
